Once everything is sorted and ready, most flats and small houses can be cleared in a single day. Larger, fuller homes can take two days. But every house is different, so treat any figure as a rough guide.
The bigger time question is often the sorting beforehand. That part depends on you and your family, not the clearance crew.

What Makes a Clearance Quicker or Slower
Quicker
- Everything sorted, with "keep" items out of the way
- Small things already bagged or boxed
- Parking right outside the door
- Ground floor, or wide stairs
- Clear, written instructions for the crew
Slower
- A very full house, loft, garage or shed
- Upstairs flats with no lift
- Long walks from where the van can park
- Large furniture that has to be taken apart
- Decisions still being made on the day
- Items that need separating, such as sofas, fridges and electricals
Most of the "slower" list can't be helped, and that's fine. What matters is that the company knows about it beforehand, so the right size crew and enough time are booked.
What Happens on the Day
Knowing the order of things helps you plan your own time:
- Walk round. The crew checks what is going and what is staying. This is the best time for you to be there.
- Protect and prepare. Doors are propped, floors and banisters protected, and large furniture taken apart if it won't fit through.
- Loading. Usually the biggest items first, then boxes and bags. Fridges, electricals and sofas are kept apart from general waste.
- Loft, garage, shed and garden. These are often left until the house is clear, so there is room to work.
- Final check. Every room and cupboard is checked and the floors swept.
If the job needs more than one van load, the crew may need to make a trip to a licensed waste site part-way through. That is built into the time on the quote.
The Sorting Takes Longest
Families are often surprised that the clearance itself is the quick part. Going through a lifetime of belongings can take days or weeks, especially after a death.
Some tips to keep it moving:
- Do the paperwork search first, then the easy rooms, and leave the most personal rooms till later.
- Set short sessions with breaks. Tired people make poor decisions.
- Book charity collections early. They may not have a slot before your deadline.
- Keep a "not sure" box rather than stopping on every item.
- If you are running out of time, consider putting things in storage and deciding later.

Common deadlines are a tenancy ending, a house sale completing, or a move into care. Work backwards from the date:
- Get clearance quotes early, so you know how long the clearance needs.
- Book the clearance a few days before the deadline, not on the last day. That leaves room for anything unexpected.
- Plan the sorting in the time before that.
- Leave time after the clearance for a clean, meter readings and handing back keys.
