House Clearance and Removals Across the City

Stoke-on-Trent is not one town but six. Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton joined together in 1910, and the city got its city status in 1925. That history still shapes how jobs work here. Each town has its own centre, its own older streets and its own newer estates.

House Clearance Staffordshire works in partnership with Kwikshift Removals & Storage. Kwikshift's crews and vans do all of the work. Across the city we can help with:

Kwikshift is an upper tier waste carrier (Environment Agency number CBDU232762) with £10 million public liability insurance. Waste goes to licensed sites, and you can ask for a waste transfer note. Furniture that can be used again goes to new homes or charities where possible.

Where We Work in and Around Stoke

We cover all six towns and the districts in between. That includes:

North of the city

Tunstall, Burslem, Middleport and Bank Top, up towards Chell.

Centre and east

Hanley, Stoke, Fenton, Bucknall, Bentilee and Berry Hill.

South of the city

Longton, Meir and Trentham, on the southern edge of the city.

Some places that feel like part of Stoke are actually just over the city boundary:

  • Blythe Bridge, Forsbrook, Caverswall, Werrington and Bagnall are in Staffordshire Moorlands.
  • Barlaston, home of the Wedgwood factory, and Meir Heath are in Stafford Borough.

This matters for one reason. The city's tips and bulky waste service are only for people who live in the city. If you live in one of these places, your own council's services apply instead. For us it makes no difference: Kwikshift covers them all. For homes further north, see our Newcastle-under-Lyme and Kidsgrove pages.

The Council's Options, and When a Clearance Makes More Sense

If you only have a sofa or a fridge to get rid of, start with Stoke-on-Trent City Council. It is often the simplest route.

  • Bulky waste collection. The council collects large household items that you leave at the kerbside. It is only for households that pay council tax to the city. The council says it cannot be used by businesses or landlords, and there are limits on size and number of items. Check the council's bulky waste page for current details and charges.
  • The two city tips. These are Hanford tip on Campbell Road and Burslem tip on Federation Road. They are for city residents only and do not take trade waste. If you arrive in a van or with a trailer, you will be asked for your driving licence. See the council's tip page for opening times.

A private clearance usually makes more sense when:

  • a whole house, flat or office needs emptying, not just a few items;
  • things need carrying down stairs or out of a loft, shed or garage;
  • you are a landlord or a business, so the council service is not open to you;
  • you are an executor and need someone to sort through things with care;
  • you have no van, no time, or are not able to do the lifting yourself.

Probate House Clearance in Stoke-on-Trent

Clearing a parent's or relative's home is hard. Often the house has been lived in for many years and is full of furniture, ornaments, paperwork and memories.

We go at the pace that suits you. Before the crew starts, tell us what the family wants to keep. Kwikshift can set aside papers, photos, keepsakes and anything that looks valuable, so nothing important ends up in the van by mistake.

If you live away, you do not need to be there on the day. Photos and a key arrangement are usually enough to plan the job. Once the house is empty, it is ready for the estate agent, the landlord or the council housing team.

Our guide to probate house clearance explains what to do first, and what to keep back.

House and Office Removals in Stoke-on-Trent

Kwikshift has over 15 years in removals. They move people across the city, into Stoke from elsewhere, and out of Stoke to anywhere in the UK.

  • Home moves. A packing service, protective covers, and furniture taken apart and put back together at the other end.
  • Office removals. Desks, cabinets and office furniture moved for small businesses and offices across the six towns.
  • Clear first, then move. Many people downsizing in Stoke want to clear out before they move. Kwikshift can do both, so you only pay to move what you are keeping.
  • Storage. If your dates don't line up, your things can go into Kwikshift's secure, CCTV-monitored storage for a short or long time.

If you are comparing removal companies in Stoke-on-Trent, ask each one the same questions: are they insured, can they pack for you, and can they store things if your dates slip? Kwikshift can say yes to all three.

Homes, Streets and Access in Stoke

People often think of Stoke as row after row of old terraces. The council's own housing survey from 2017 tells a different story. Most private homes in the city were built after the Second World War. The oldest, pre-1919 houses are grouped in central areas, such as Hanley Park, Shelton and the centre of Burslem.

The same survey found that private renting had roughly doubled, from about one home in eight in 2009 to about one in four in 2017. That means many homes in Stoke change hands between tenants, and landlords often need a property cleared before the next let. Our end of tenancy guide for landlords covers what you are responsible for.

Every street is different, so it helps to tell us about access when you ask for a quote:

  • Older terraced streets can be narrow, with cars parked on both sides. Let us know if there is a back entry, or if parking near the door is hard.
  • Flats may mean stairs and no lift, which changes how long a job takes.
  • Newer estates are usually easier for a lorry, but shared drives and turning space still matter.
  • Lofts, cellars, sheds and garages are easy to forget. Mention them so the quote covers everything.

A few clear photos of each room, the front of the house and the road outside are often enough for Kwikshift to give a quote without a visit.

Before You Book

Whoever you use, check they hold a waste carrier licence. If a clearance firm dumps your waste, you can still be held responsible. Our guide on how to choose a licensed house clearance company explains the checks to make.
